Parents ask us the same question almost every day: how old does my child have to be to come along? The honest answer is that it depends less on age than on the water. Calm, standing water is forgiving. A river with current is much less so. Here you will find the actual age limits, what your child really needs to be able to do, how long children realistically last and what a tour costs.

The short answer

On the calm Heimbach reservoir, children can join from the age of 7, all year round, in a stable four-person Canadian canoe. On the guided Rur tour the minimum age is 9, because there is real current and a distance of 14 kilometres. In both cases we expect basic swimming skills. Life jackets are provided by us and are mandatory.

Standing water first: the reservoir from age 7

If your child is paddling for the first time, the reservoir is the right choice. The water stands still, there is no significant current, no weirs and no point where you would have to hurry. You paddle in a four-person Canadian canoe, a wide and very stable boat with comfortable room for two adults and two children. If the little ones put the paddle down for a while, the boat simply keeps going. That takes the pressure off children and parents alike.

There is a practical advantage too: the reservoir is open all year round. You are not tied to the summer months and can go out in spring or autumn as well, when other stretches of water have long since closed.

Flowing water later: the Rur tour from age 9

The guided Rur tour is not a loop but a genuine river descent: 14 kilometres from Heimbach to Zerkall, starting at 11:15, with around 4.5 hours on the water. There is current, small rapids and sections where the boat needs steering. That is why the minimum age here is 9 rather than 7.

One thing to keep in mind when planning your day: the tour reliably fills the window from 11:15 until roughly 15:45. If you are travelling with children, schedule anything else before or after that. Because of nature conservation rules, the Rur can only be paddled from 15 July to 28 February.

What your child needs to be able to do

Two things matter to us, and we are deliberately open about them. First, basic swimming skills. Every child gets a life jacket from us, it is mandatory and adds safety, but it does not replace being able to swim. Second, the willingness to stay seated in the boat and listen to the guide. Nobody needs paddling technique in advance, we show that before the start.

How long do children last?

A realistic view helps more than optimism. Children between 7 and 9 usually do well for one to two hours on calm water, after which concentration fades. That matches the reservoir perfectly. Between 9 and 12 the Rur tour generally works well, because something is always happening along the way and the break splits the day. From around 12, most children paddle actively and want to steer themselves.

Our tip: choose the shorter tour and finish in a good mood rather than picking the long one and having to grit your teeth for the last hour.

Safety: what the guide handles, what you do in the boat

A guide always comes along on the guided tours. They give the briefing before the start, keep an eye on the group, set the pace and step in if something does not go smoothly. We provide life jackets for everyone, along with boats and paddles.

Your job in the boat is straightforward: one adult sits at the back and steers, the children sit in front and paddle as much as they like. Valuables go into a dry bag and a change of clothes waits at the finish. Everything else worth bringing is listed in our canoe trip packing list.

What does canoeing with kids cost?

On the Rur we advise against it, that stretch is only suitable for experienced paddlers who know the area. With children we recommend the guided tour, because a guide comes along and all equipment is provided. We do not offer multi-day rentals.

What happens in bad weather?

Light rain is rarely a problem on the water and the tour is still fun with the right clothing. If the weather turns critical, we will get in touch with you.
