Canoeing on the Rhine and Moselle: Too Dangerous for Beginners?

The Rhine and Moselle look inviting: wide, calm, with castles and vineyards along the bank. No wonder many people ask whether you can canoe there. The honest answer: it is allowed, but both are federal waterways with heavy commercial traffic, and that makes them dangerous for beginners. We take safety seriously and tell you clearly here why, and where you can paddle safely in the Eifel.

The short answer

Canoeing is generally allowed on the Rhine and Moselle, but it is not for beginners. Large cargo ships can barely brake or change course, you as a small boat must give way, and current, suction and wash come on top. For a relaxed or family-friendly day of paddling, both are unsuitable. Safe and beginner-friendly, on the other hand, is the Rur in Eifel National Park.

Why the Rhine and Moselle are dangerous

On a federal waterway the shipping police regulations apply, and commercial shipping has priority. In concrete terms that means:

  • Large ships cannot stop: a freighter has a long braking distance and a blind spot in which a canoe simply cannot be seen.
  • You must give way: as a muscle-powered small craft you have to give way to the commercial ships, not the other way around.
  • Suction, wash and groynes: passing ships create suction and waves, and at the groynes on the Rhine dangerous currents form.

Technically the current is often harmless, the real danger comes from the ship traffic. That is exactly why we clearly advise beginners against it.

Who the Rhine and Moselle are even an option for

Only experienced paddlers who know the rules on the water, can judge the shipping and stay at the edge. For a first day of paddling, with children or in a group, both are the wrong choice.

Paddle safely: the Rur and the reservoir

We provide the boat, paddle and life jacket, give you a briefing before you set off and guide you from Heimbach to Zerkall. Start 11:15, lasting around 4.5 hours (2.5 to 3 hours of it on the water).
